Recently,  Jiangxi Colleges Alliance for International Communication organized 7 international students to come to Fuzhou, Jiangxi Province, the hometown of Tang Xianzu, an outstanding playwright and literary figure in the Ming Dynasty, to carry out the "Tang Xianzu Classic Recitation" international cultural exchange activity, moistening the soul with the fragrance of books and promoting exchanges with classics.

At the Tang Xianzu Memorial Hall, everyone attentively listened to the life introduction, creative reasons, and future influence of the literary giant Tang Xianzu, deeply studied the story summary and spiritual essence of the "Four Dreams of Linchuan", watched the classic reproduction of surround projection, listened to the film-television clips of opera performances, imitates the lyrics, singing style, actor gestures, and character footsteps of the Kunqu Opera "Peony Pavilion"; At the Shakespeare and Cervantes exhibition hall, everyone was attracted by the charm of the exchange and mutual learning between Eastern and Western civilizations, and the ability to transcend time and space. They were impressed by the artistic achievements of three literary giants of the same time, Tang Xianzu, Shakespeare, and Cervantes, and were delighted by the role of their own country's art in cross-cultural communication and collision. When Rayhana, a Moroccan international student from Jiangxi University of Water Resources and Electric Power, saw the stills of the 2017 Spanish Silk Road Theater musical "Silk Road" performed in Fuzhou in the exhibition hall, she excitedly pointed to one of the performers and introduced to everyone, "This is the traditional costume of women in our country - Kaftan !

Arriving at Tang Xianzu Bookstore, posters of the nationwide reading activity in Jiangxi Province can be seen everywhere, creating a strong atmosphere. In March of this year, Fuzhou cultural classics such as Shakespeare's poetic English translations of "The Peony Pavilion," "The Purple Hairpin," "Nanke," and "Handan," which were showcased at the 2026 London International Book Fair, were prominently displayed at the counter. This set of English translations was adopted by Professor Huang Bikang from the School of Foreign Languages at Peking University and President of the Shakespeare Research Branch of the Chinese Society of Foreign Literature. After ten years of translation, it was completed and published by the Commercial Press and the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Ashima, a Moroccan international student from Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics who came to China to participate in the 2025 Tang Xianzu Drama Exchange Month, became acquainted with Fuzhou. After learning that the London Book Fair had exhibited an English translation that sparked global discussion, she also went to Linchuan to trace the roots and immerse herself in Linchuan culture. She said, "I am truly happy that Tang Xianzu's works have gone global with Shakespearean poetic strokes. Many of my Chinese friends around me are also reading foreign classics. Books have the power to cross national borders, and we should read more good books like this to allow culture to have more exchanges.

International students are reading the English translation of "Four Dreams of Linchuan" at Tang Xianzu Bookstore

In the reading room of the bookstore, Associate Professor Xu Yunwei from Gandong College led seven international students to introduce and share works translated into English. Through interpretation, they guided everyone to understand the human care and life thinking contained in the "Four Dreams of Linchuan" and their cross-cultural commonalities. They also recited the classic excerpt of "The Peony Pavilion" in unison. International students read while communicating, carefully reading in front of the counter, absorbing the spiritual nourishment of literary classics from ancient times to the present, and experiencing the life experiences and cultural pulse of different eras. Ni Aina, a PhD in linguistics from Madagascar at Jiangxi Normal University, said with deep emotion, "Participating in this event has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of Chinese opera culture. I greatly admire the translators who have spent 10 years translating classics and hope to contribute their efforts to the Sinoforeign exchange of the 'Four Dreams of Linchuan'.

This event is jointly organized by Jiangxi Colleges Alliance for International Communication and the Propaganda Department of the Fuzhou Municipal Party Committee. International students from Jiangxi Normal University, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, and Jiangxi University of Water Resources and Electric Power participated. It is one of the measures to implement the strategic cooperation between the alliance and Fuzhou, aiming to tell the story of China well, spread the good voice of Jiangxi, enhance the global recognition of Linchuan culture, and make Jiangxi cultural symbols spread more widely and further.
